Real Madrid ‘keen’ to bring Man United boss Jose Mourinho back – Castles
As per a report from Duncan Castles this evening, European champions Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the situation of Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, ahead of a possible move for the Portuguese tactician.
Barcelona 5-1 Real Madrid
Speculation surrounding the hotseat at Real intensified over the last 48 hours, following Los Blancos’ embarrassing 5-1 defeat at the hands of fierce rivals Barcelona on Sunday afternoon:
Lopetegui sacked
Julen Lopetegui, who only took over the reigns at the Bernabeu this past June after being sacked by the Spanish Football Federation, endured a nightmare run of results over the last month.
Los Merengues have picked up just a solitary win from their last seven outings across all competitions, with Sunday’s humiliating loss to Barcelona having acted as the straw that broke the camel’s back.
As such, Lopetegui’s inevitable sacking was unsurprisingly made official in a statement last night:

Conte deal falls through
Mounting reports over recent days suggested that Real’s board had identified former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as the ideal candidate to replace Lopetegui, with some outlets having even suggested that negotiations between the parties had begun over a week ago.
However, a breakdown in negotiations following a rumoured revolt from some of Los Blancos’ senior players against Conte’s appointment has since seen Castilla boss Santi Solari placed in temporary charge at the club.
Mourinho back to Real?
As such, the bench at the Bernabeu looks to be wide open as things stand.
Claims even emerged earlier today that Real’s players are keen on the idea of Zinedine Zidane returning to the club.
However, as per Duncan Castles’ aforementioned report, the club themselves are eyeing a move for another of their former managers.
The tactician in question is Jose Mourinho, who took charge of Los Merengues from 2010-2013.
Mourinho racked up a La Liga title with a record points haul during his time in Spain, with Castles claiming that Real president Florentino Perez still holds the Man United boss in high regard.
As such, the board of the European champions are said to be keeping a close eye on developments surrounding the oft-criticized Portuguese tactician at Old Trafford, ahead of a potential return to the club.
Despite widespread criticism, for his part, Mourinho recently had the following to say regarding his future with United:
‘My future is here. I have a contract and until the end of my contract I only think about Manchester United. I am happy to stay here longer than that.’
