However, the 41-year-old Chelsea manager has revealed that the 28-year-old will soon be back in training, and should be fit again following the next international break.

Victim of his own success

It has been a stop-start season for the former Leicester City man. He has been included in the starting XI in just three of the first 10 Premier League matches of the season, with just five starts in all competitions combined.

A sprained ankle was initially the issue, whilst he is now struggling with a hamstring injury.

On more than occasion, despite us only being in November, he has been rushed back into the action. For example, he started in the Blues’ 2-1 loss against Liverpool, only to sit out the next game against Brighton, before returning against Southampton.

Also, Lampard criticised Didier Deschamps for his treatment of the former Caen man during that aforementioned international break.

The £90m-valued all-action midfielder is starting to become a victim of his own success. In the last six seasons, he has played in all but 11 league fixtures for Caen, Leicester and Chelsea. That is understandable – after all, he is one of the best in the division, being named in two Premier League Team of the Seasons previously.

However, his style of play means he covers a lot of ground. Last season, only two players ran more than him across England’s top tier, whilst he has been in the top three tacklers in the division in three of the last four seasons.

That will unavoidably take a toll on his body, and now he is feeling the effects of such regular and pounding action. He is indispensable, so much so that his own condition is not being taken into consideration.

As one of the best in the world, it would be a shame to see his career cut short. He needs to be taken care off to keep him at his highest level for as long as possible.
