David Luiz reveals what inspired his wacky goal celebration on Sunday
Arsenal defender David Luiz paid homage to his friends in Rwanda by celebrating like a gorilla during Sunday’s clash against Crystal Palace. At a time where controversy fills Arsenal’s media columns, an encounter between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and fans being the latest miserable episode, this news will come as a wholesome respite.
There’s a good reason for Luiz’s touching tribute, as well. Arsenal have a partnership with Visit Rwanda and the Brazilian is the club’s representative.

The 32-year-old spent the recent international break on a trip to the country, which was well documented on his Instagram page. Helping with local conservation efforts, Luiz was snapped planting trees and even spent time amongst a family of wild gorillas.
He said on one of his posts: “Visiting mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park with my family was just amazing! Thanks to the rangers, trackers, guides and local communities for everything you do to care for these beautiful animals!!! So happy that the number of gorillas in Rwanda is growing and I can’t wait to go back!”
Luiz moved to the Emirates in an £8m switch in the summer but has failed to make an immediate impact on the club’s fortunes. Their disappointing draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday, which saw club captain Granit Xhaka swear at his own fans after being booed off the pitch, followed on from an unfortunately not so shocking shock defeat to Sheffield United last week.
Gorillas, though.
