Darren Bent believes Marco Silva has a tough situation with where to play Richarlison, claiming that the Brazilian is better as a winger than a striker.

What did he say?

Richarlison has brought versatility in the attacking positions for Everton over the past year since he signed from Watford. Of late, Silva has started the 22-year-old as a central striker, with Bernard taking the position on the left.

In these games, Richarlison has not scored, although his header from a corner was deflected in off Adam Webster against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bent told Football Insider: “He is an amazing talent as he is a player who can deliver performances that make you go ‘OMG, Wow’ but it’s that word again, inconsistent.

“At times he won’t be as effective for Everton and I actually think Silva has a tough situation with him over where to play him.

“I think Richarlison sees himself as a No.9 and playing in a central position, but I think he can be more effective being played as a winger as he can cut inside and cause problems.”

Winger or striker?

The injury in the Brighton game to Bernard is going to force Silva to think about the personnel in his attacking unit. As a result, Richarlison may end up going back out as a winger, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin up top.

In reality, this makes sense, as Calvert-Lewin scored against the Seagulls, meaning he has three Premier League goals so far – one more than Richarlison.

Last season, as shown by games recorded by Transfermarkt, the former Watford man was in magnificent form on the wings for Silva. In the Premier League, he bagged five times from the striker role but his other eight goals came from out wide.

If you combine this with Calvert-Lewin’s improving form, it makes sense to play the two in these respective roles.
