Tottenham striker Harry Kane has said that the gap to Chelsea in the Premier League is not a problem at this point of the season.

What did he say?

Spurs did manage to go 1-0 up against Liverpool in the first minute on Sunday, but that was as good as it got for the north London outfit. They eventually lost 2-1, which now means that they have not won in their last three Premier League matches.

They are currently eight points behind the Blues, as such. After the game, Kane was asked whether there he was worried that the gap was insurmountable.

He responded:

“Not at this stage. I think there’s a lot of football to be played and a lot of games left.

“It’s important just to concentrate on ourselves at the moment and we pick up our form as at the moment it’s not good enough.

“We’re not winning enough games and we need to put that right and the rest will take care of itself.”

Not looking good

You expect the 26-year-old to be defiant after the match after another disappointing day for his side, and of course, eight points with 28 matches left would not be impossible to pull back.

Unfortunately, though, history is not on Tottenham’s side. Not once this decade has a team come back from the such a deficit at this point of the campaign to finish in the top four. Only Arsenal in 2011/12 came close, pulling back six points to qualify for the Champions League.

That is not the only reason why Chelsea will be feeling confident of holding off the Lilywhites, though.

At the moment, the two clubs are going in opposite directions. At Stamford Bridge, there is plenty of positivity, and there appears to be a fresh impetus moving forward.

Frank Lampard has galvanised the youngsters at his disposal, and they appear to be hungry for success.

Tottenham, meanwhile, appear to have gone stale under Mauricio Pochettino.

There has been plenty of questions asked about his future, as well as for a number of the club’s star players, such as Christian Eriksen. It looks as though an end of era is upon us, and it could have a damaging impact on their fight for the top four this term.

The only real danger to Chelsea’s lead over Tottenham is themselves and their complacency.

Under Lampard, they look to have found their feet. They have won their last seven games in all competitions, whilst even the stars who looked in trouble are now beginning to fit in, such as Christian Pulisic. Yes, there is plenty of time left as £135m-valued Kane says, but the current trajectories will only be a positive for one of the two rivals.
