Powerplay: £100m asking price underlines Man City's prowess in the transfer market - opinion

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

One thing that you can’t say about Manchester City is that they’re a selling club.

Every other top Premier League team have seen some of their top talents poached by another European super-club at one point or another, but City have been able to avoid that since their rise to the summit of English football.

Indeed, we’ve seen Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas move to Barcelona while Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have moved to Real Madrid.

Each of the other top six clubs have lost one of their star players to one of Europe’s elite, but City have been able to avoid that fate.

Recent reports show exactly what separates them from the rest of England’s top sides.

What’s the story then?

A report was published over the weekend that stated Manchester City have set a £100m pricetag on Gabriel Jesus’ head.

Apparently City have done this after learning of interest in both players from Bayern Munich.

Separates them from the rest

Man City are once again showing what separates them from the rest of the top six.

This isn’t just about the club’s financial power anymore, City genuinely have one of the most interesting projects in world football going on, and that’s part of the reason why they’ve been able to keep hold of their stars over the past decade.

Of course, it helps that they seemingly don’t need the money, as it allows them to say ‘£100m or nothing’ to a team like Bayern Munich.

But the fact that none of their star players have forced a move to a European powerhouse over the past few years is telling about how powerful the club have become during a period of revolution and upheaval in Manchester.

Not only do the Citizens have plenty of power in regard to incoming signings, they also have an incredibly strong record of keeping their star players at the club and their attitude over Jesus provides a glimpse into one of the reasons why.
