According to The Evening Standard, Everton are keen on taking Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loan for the upcoming campaign.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Everton were interested in bringing Kurt Zouma back to the club after a successful spell at Goodison Park last season, but it now appears that they have turned their attentions towards his Blues teammate.

The Evening Standard claim that Frank Lampard is keen on keeping hold of Zouma this season, and that the west London side have decided to send Tomori on loan. The report adds that rather than getting the 21-year-old to join another Championship side like Derby last season, the Blues are intent on having Tomori experience top-flight football to aid his development.

A win-win situation

Another season-long loan for Tomori makes sense not just for the player, but for Chelsea too. The Blues still have an abundance of centre-back options including the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, David Luiz and Zouma.

The chances of Tomori getting considerable first-team action at Chelsea, despite Lampard’s openness to giving youngsters a chance next season, seems fairly limited. But allowing him to stay in the Premier League and enjoy a similarly productive spell like Zouma did with Everton could be huge for his progress.

The England U21 international has bags of potential and was named Derby’s Player of the Season last year after an impressive campaign. But the step-up from Championship football to the Premier League remains enormous, and Chelsea simply are not in a position where they can afford too many teething mistakes from young stars.

Sending him to a fellow top-flight side – and a competitive one at that too – would provide Tomori with valuable first-team minutes in the league he is trying to eventually play in. By all accounts, a loan spell to Everton appears to be the perfect decision for both player and club.
