'Way more dangerous than Austin' - These Southampton fans deliver verdict on attacker
Southampton are out of the Carabao Cup after Leicester City won on penalties on Tuesday night, to set up a quarter-final tie with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Mark Hughes’ men made the long trip north from St Mary’s Stadium, and the Welshman handed Irish forward Michael Obafemi his first start for the Saints.
Hughes had called on Obafemi from the bench three times in the Premier League already this season, and the teenager made his senior Republic of Ireland debut against Denmark earlier this month.
Against Leicester, the 18-year-old led the line and had an excellent opportunity to open his Saints account with the scores level, but he was unable to find the net when well placed.
Playmaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…
The St Mary’s outfit went on to lose the tie 6-5 on penalties after VAR ruled against Nathan Redmond when Steven Davis hammered home after 82 minutes – Roger East deeming the English winger had handled the ball in the build-up.
Obafemi had started in place of the injured duo of Danny Ings and Shane Long, as well as 29-year-old forward Charlie Austin, who has scored once in 11 outings this season.
Despite Obafemi missing his best chance to score and their side going on to lose the game, these Saints fans were optimistic about what the future holds for the teenager…
I’d still start obefemi at the weekend. he works hard and gets into good positions. gabbi and austin have been very static of late we havent got much choice. hes bound to put one of them away eventually. #saintsfc

Things I took from tonight:
1. Valery > Cedric, all day long.
2. Three at the back should remain.
3. Vestergaard should be starting.
4. Lemina & PEH partnership still going well.
5. Redmond is excellent in the ‘free role’.
6. Obafemi is way more dangerous than Austin #saintsfc— Charlie Hawkins (@charliehawk93) November 27, 2018
Obafemi and valery would of learnt plenty yesterday. Funny how our academy players look a lot brighter then our big money signings. I think it shows how bad our recruitment has been. #SaintsFC

310 miles, home at 1am, no regrets. Unlucky not to progress but plenty of promising signs, particularly from youngsters Obafemi and Valery. Our fans were amazing, united by the fight shown, was nice to be part of a positive atmosphere. Let’s hope we can build on this #saintsfc ? pic.twitter.com/8cmjZ2Uitl

Michael Obafemi is getting a lot of stick on social media for his miss, but once he gets one goal for the 1st team the pressure will be off & they should start flowing. He finished well for the U23s, and for the 1st team so far he’s been so impressive in other areas. #saintsfc

Relatively pleased with the performance tonight, unlucky not to win and were the better side. Good to see Obafemi have a good game and Redmond improving of late, dangerous on the break. MOM for me. Onto United now Saturday. #saintsfc ?

Obafemi played very well tonight. Deserves a place in the team every week. Gave a lot of fight! #saintsfc
