If Hughes hopes to retain his current job, belief is Southampton need to beat United. The Times report:

Hughes is likely to be given one more match to turn things around – against Manchester United on Saturday – but another defeat could spell the end of his eight-month spell in charge.

Southampton are third bottom of the league with 8 points. Indeed, they are only off the bottom on goal difference ahead of Fulham and Cardiff.

Southampton are in woeful form. They are winless in seven matches, while they come into the Man United game on the back of defeats to Fulham and Leicester.

Paulo Sousa’s managerial record

Is Paulo Sousa really the guy to turn things around on the south coast?

Paulo Sousa has some experience in English football having previously been in charge of QPR, Swansea and Leicester.

But the Portuguese failed to make a major impact at any of those clubs.

At Swansea, he lead the club  to an eighth-place finish in the Championship in the 2009/10 campaign.

Sousa was sacked from Leicester in 2010 after picking up one win in the opening nine matches of the season.
