Fears Jurgen Klopp will be banned after Liverpool lost to PSG

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp after PSG

Jurgen Klopp gave a series of quotes after Wednesday night’s defeat against PSG which singled out the referee for criticism.

The match was officiated by Polish ref Szymon Marciniak.

Throughout the game, PSG players kept falling on the floor despite a distinct lack of any injuries.

Indeed, the worst tackle of the night came from Marco Verratti on Joe Gomez. Verratti was lucky to escape with a caution.

Klopp vented his frustrations after the match with lines such as:

The number of interruptions in the game was just not cool.

I could say 500,000 things [on play-acting] . . . but you can give yellow cards for everything. If you act like you die and the next moment you get up again, you could give a yellow card.

Klopp vs Szymon Marciniak

Perhaps Klopp’s fiercest criticism of the match official came in an interview with Jan Aage Fjortoft.

The Liverpool boss  attacked the referee’s performance in the PSG game directly:

The ref needs to be prepared for a game like this, and he did not look prepared.

Will UEFA punish Liverpool’s Klopp?

UEFA could well punish Klopp for his post match comments.

Looking at precedents, back in June Gianluigi Buffon was slapped with a three match ban after Juventus were knocked out the Champions League to Real Madrid.

Buffon’s ban came after he claimed referee Michael Oliver had “a garbage bin for a heart.”

While Klopp’s comments towards Szymon Marciniak weren’t on that level, they could still provoke UEFA into disciplinary action.
