Opinion: Steve McClaren needs to make his smartest transfer decision of the entire summer
QPR’s star midfielder Luke Freeman is a transfer target for Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion according to The Mirror.
What’s the story?
The 26-year-old moved to Loftus Road from Bristol City in January 2017 and has since become a key player and fan favourite, making 61 league appearances for the Rs.
He had a strong return last season, scoring five goals and assisting 12 and averaging an impressive 2.4 key passes per game.
Now the attacking midfielder is wanted by rival Championship clubs Middlesbrough and West Brom, and he is valued at £2.7million on Transfermarkt.
Keep him at all costs
Freeman was QPR’s main creative outlet last season and in a team that only scored 58 league goals, they couldn’t afford to lose his contribution.
He made the most appearances of any player in the QPR squad last season and Steve McClaren would find it very difficult to replace a player of his quality.
With the fees being bandied about for quality Championship players at the moment, if QPR do look to sell their star, they should demand a lot more than his current valuation on Transfermarkt.
However, with McClaren not making many moves in the transfer market, he should focus on keeping their best players and Freeman is someone they should keep no matter what they’re offered.
