Forget Marega, £16.2m-rated forward would make West Ham European contenders next season
According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United have recently held talks with Porto over a move for their forward Moussa Marega, but the Hammers should instead attempt to sign Olivier Giroud from Chelsea.
What’s the story?
West Ham have been extremely active in this summer’s transfer market, with no less than seven new players arriving at the London Stadium.
Indeed, Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko, Lukasz Fabianski, Fabian Balbuena, Ryan Fredericks and Jack Wilshere have all moved to the club this summer.
Head coach Manuel Pellegrini is still believed to be in the market for a new forward, however, and according to the Daily Mail, Marega has been discussed.
The 27-year-old scored 23 times for Porto last season, but is unproven in the Premier League, and would be somewhat of a risky signing for West Ham.
With that in mind, the London club should attempt to sign Giroud from Chelsea in what would be a very ambitious move.
Could West Ham really sign him?
Giroud, who helped France win the 2018 World Cup earlier this summer, joined Chelsea from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The 31-year-old scored five times in 18 appearances for the Blues in the second half of last season, but the striker actually only penned an 18-month contract at Stamford Bridge.
Marseille have been credited with an interest in the Frenchman, but West Ham should splash the cash to bring the forward to the London Stadium this summer.
Giroud – valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt – was linked with a move to the Hammers last summer before ultimately staying at Arsenal, but his situation has now changed.
The striker scored 105 times in 253 appearances for Arsenal, and his arrival at West Ham ahead of the 2018-19 campaign would make them serious challengers for a Europa League position next term.
