These Newcastle fans are wrong about "garbage" midfielder Benitez wants at St. James' - opinion
Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
What’s the story?
According to TeamTALK, Rafael Benitez is keen to sign the midfielder this summer.
Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame could all leave St. James’ Park, so the Magpies will need some reinforcements in the engine room.
The Magpies were linked with McCarthy back in 2017 during Benitez’s first full season with the club, and it appears the Spaniard is still a fan of the tough-tackling Toffee.
Shrewd signing
Newcastle fans’ reactions to the McCarthy links have been largely negative, due mainly to aspirations of bigger and better things under the potential new owners.
2 seasons late.. Cairney would be a better choice

He literally gets mentioned every season, not good enough for me

Garbage.

However, a takeover doesn’t mean every signing will be a big one, and McCarthy would be a very astute addition.
Aforementioned, Benitez is about to lose most of his midfield, and the Republic of Ireland international is tidy in possession, an excellent defensive shield and even pops up with the odd goal.
The 28 year-old appeared just once in the league last season, spending the entire campaign recovering from a gruesome leg injury, but with a full pre-season under his belt he will no doubt be one of Benitez’s hardest workers.

With just over 12 months left on his contract and valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt, McCarthy could inject some life into what is soon to be Newcastle’s weakest position, and all for an affordable price. The fans are dead wrong about this one.
