Lionel Messi overtakes Mo Salah as Barcelona secure La Liga title

Barcelona this evening secured the Spanish top-flight title, courtesy of a 4-2 win versus Deportivo La Coruna.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at the Estadio Riazor tonight, with hosts Depor having come into proceedings aware that a loss would see them relegated to the Segunda division.

Barca, meanwhile, needed just a solitary point to secure the La Liga title, despite having 4 fixtures remaining after tonight.

A thrilling clash was subsequently played out at the Riazor this evening, with first-half goals from Philippe Coutinho and Lionel Messi having looked as though they were set to send visitors Barca on their way to a comfortable 3 points.

However, Depor, under manager Clarence Seedorf, showcased an impressive never-say-die attitude, pulling a pair of goals back through Lucas Perez and Emre Colak to set up a nail-biting final half-hour.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure as the second-half progressed, and looked as though they genuinely could have snatched a go-ahead goal, but, in the end, the class of Lionel Messi and the Blaugrana proved too much.

After Suarez set up Messi for his first of the night, the Uruguayan then laid on his fellow South American for his brace, before Suarez once again sent Messi through on goal with 5 minutes to go to see the 30-year-old notch his hat-trick, and Barcelona secure the La Liga title in the process:

Leading the pack

Messi’s 3 goals tonight mean that the South American attacker has now notched 32 times in the league, once more than closest rival Mohamed Salah in the race for the European golden boot:

It should also be noted that another of the main contenders in the race for the Golden Boot, in the form of Ciro Immobile, was forced off in tears after picking up an injury during Lazio’s clash with Torino this evening, with the possibility existing that the Italian hitman will not play again this season.
