Arsene Wenger speaks about how successor will benefit from his tenure
Youth
Arsene Wenger may be leaving Arsenal come the end of the season, and many people think the north London club need a complete overhaul if they want to compete for the title and top four once he’s gone, but despite that, Wenger himself thinks that the club certainly have one thing going for them – the youth in the side.
“My successor will watch this game today,” Wenger said. “Hopefully he will come to positive conclusions of the players.
“Can they be part of the future for Arsenal Football Club? I think some of them have shown today yes, 100 per cent.
“Maitland-Niles slowly gets to the player I think he can be in defensive midfield.
“He can create as well.
“Mavropanos in training has shown top quality. But then you always have a question mark as long as you don’t see that under pressure in big games. Can he show that in a big game? You never know.
“The big players do better in competition than in training. They make a career. We have many players at our level who do less well in the competition than in training.
“So that was the question mark before the game and I think he did well. He surprised everyone by his quality today.”
Champions League
One massive thing Wenger can do for his successor is of course make sure they have Champions League football at the club next term – and that will come via winning the Europa League.
The second leg against La Liga side Atletico Madrid will be open, with the 1-1 draw meaning Arsenal are forced to attack if they want to go through in the tie, and with Atleti having one of the best defences in Europe at the minute, it will certainly be one hell of a task for Wenger and his men.
