36-year-old would be utterly out of his depth if he succeeded Wenger at Arsenal

Manchester City will resist all advances from Arsenal for their assistant manager Mikel Arteta after he was linked with a return to the club he captained, as manager – according to the Mirror.

However, the Spaniard is wise to remain where he is for now and continue his development as a coach under Pep Guardiola. The time for him to make a big move will come.

What’s the story, then?

36-year-old Arteta has been linked with the hotseat at the Emirates Stadium when Arsene Wenger completes his protracted departure from North London after 22 years at the helm.

However, the report states that City have high hopes for the former Everton man, despite the fact that Wenger would like a former Gunners player to take over his mantle in the summer.

That means that they are reluctant to see Arteta leave the club prematurely and Arsenal are likely to be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.

The big job would be far too soon

Arteta is clearly highly rated by Guardiola and City, which is a testament to how talented he is and how good he could become.

But, the simple fact remains that he has never been the manager of a club; so taking over at an elite club, who need a change of direction and have a restless fanbase is going to be too big an ask.

The scale of the task would eat him up whole – think David Moyes 2013/14 – and it would serve to do more harm than good to a promising career.
