Official: West Brom confirm signing of Liverpool striker

West Bromwich Albion have this evening confirmed the loan signing of Daniel Sturridge from Liverpool.

Crocked

Former Chelsea and Manchester City centre-forward Sturridge was heavily linked with an Anfield exit during the summer transfer window, following injury-plagued spells during his last two years at the club.

However, in the end, the 28-year-old stayed put on Merseyside, with Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp revealing in September that Sturridge remained a key part of his plans moving forward:

‘Yes, we did (have a chat about his future) and all was good.’

‘It was not a talk with him saying ‘when can I go?’ or ‘where can I go?’. Not that talk, but about what we planned for this season.’

‘Daniel is important, not could be, he is important.’

On the move?

However, despite Klopp’s previous suggestions to the contrary, Sturridge has not played a significant role for the Reds this season, starting in just 5 of his side’s fixtures between the Premier League and Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, this led to renewed links with an imminent Anfield departure for the Three Lions international, with a number of clubs having made contact with Liverpool since the opening of the winter transfer market earlier this month.

Done deal

Reports breaking this morning seemed to suggest that Newcastle had taken a firm lead in the race for Sturridge’s signature, but, as per a number of updates in the hours since, the Magpies were subsequently overtaken by West Brom, with the Baggies having moved quickly and decisively for the Manchester City youth product.

As confirmed across the club’s social media channels this evening, Sturridge has officially made the move to the Hawthorns on loan for the remainder of the season:
