Rafa Benitez breaks silence after Newcastle exit & slams Mike Ashley for lack of ‘vision’
Newcastle & Rafa Benitez
Newcastle United broke the news last week, but on July 1 it’s now official.
Rafa Benitez is now a free agent after his three-year contract at Newcastle ended.
Key points from Newcastle’s statement on Benitez’s exit from St James’ Park included the following:
It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.
We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.
Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30th June.

Rafa Benitez breaks silence & slams Mike Ashley for lack of ‘vision’
On Monday, Rafa Benitez has finally issued a statement about leaving Newcastle United.
Fans of the Magpies will quickly notice that Benitez never mentioned club owner Mike Ashley by name.
Indeed, Benitez didn’t name any specific directors at the club as the Spanish manager slammed them for a lack of vision.
Discussing his departure from Newcastle, Benitez wrote the following:
I wanted to stay, but I didn’t just want to sign an extended contract, I wanted to be part of a project.
Unfortunately, it became increasingly clear to me that those at the top of the Club did not share the same vision.
I’m very sad about that, but I do not regret for one moment my decision to come to Tyneside and I’m very proud about what we achieved together.
I will always have you in my heart. Best of luck for the future. C’mon Toons!
