"Please stay", "Love this man" - Loads of Newcastle fans react to Benitez's brilliant comments

Newcastle fans are absolutely loving Rafael Benitez’s latest comment, as the Spaniard hit back at Jamie Carragher’s Monday Night Football comments.

You’d be hard pushed to find a manager with a better connection with the fans at his club than Benitez, and that connection has just got a whole lot better.

The former Liverpool boss has had a tough time this summer, working on a shoestring budget to improve his Magpies’ squad, and the Monday Night Football team wondered why he wasn’t in the running for other vacancies.

Carragher asked: “Why wasn’t he (Benitez) actually in the running or interviewed for the Arsenal job with his great experience of the Premier League?”

“It may be along the lines of where the game’s going and how it’s perceived,” the Liverpool legend continued, referring to the Magpies’ deep defending against Chelsea.

In short, Carragher and co-pundit Garry Neville suspected Benitez had been overlooked for “top jobs” due to his style, but Benitez had the perfect response when asked if he was already in a top job.

“100 per cent. They talk about other managers and if they do this or they do that. I think the fans appreciated that when we (Benitez and his coaching staff) decided to stay in the Championship we took a massive risk,” the manager said.

“We did that because we could see the fans, the stadium, the city, the potential and everything about it.

“After a year in the Championship it was even more clear that the potential was there. That’s the reason why we said carry on.”

Benitez reaches the end of his contract next summer, and Mike Ashley is going to have to free up some transfer funds to make him extend that deal, but fans are loving these comments in the mean time.
