Opinion: Newcastle will solve massive left-back issue with deal for Championship ace in January

Newcastle United should consider a move for West Bromwich Albion left-back Kieran Gibbs when the transfer window opens again in January.

What’s the word?

Rafael Benitez recruited five new players during the summer market, but the left-back area was not strengthened.

Paul Dummett is first choice in that position, but if the 26-year-old suffered a damaging injury, the Magpies do not have many quality options to choose from.

With that in mind, it is worth Benitez considering a move for Gibbs in the winter window.

The 28-year-old has spent most of his career playing for Arsenal, but last year he joined West Brom after dropping down the pecking order at the Emirates.

What would Gibbs bring?

Even though the England international failed to cement a regular place at Arsenal, he spent 10 years developing and learning from the best.

Perfecting his craft at one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs carries plenty of weight.

Gibbs has experience competing at an elite level, so the offer of returning to the top flight from the Baggies, who are currently in the Championship, might be too good to turn down.

As for Newcastle, they would be getting a defensive figure that can also contribute in attack due to his speed and skill.

Gibbs could end up linking well with Kenedy on the left flank, and would challenge Dummett for the first-choice role.
