Opinion: Bielsa must win race to sign Premier League man to ensure Leeds don't slip away again
Leeds United are fighting Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday for the services of Wolves captain Danny Batth, according to The Mirror (live blog 30/08, 03:57).
What’s the word?
Marcelo Bielsa has enjoyed a superb start to life in English football with Leeds United, with the Peacocks establishing themselves as the early pacesetters in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League after four wins and a draw in their opening five matches.
Leeds are not resting on their laurels though and are seeking further additions before the loan window shuts on Friday, with The Mirror (live blog 30/08, 03:57) stating Bielsa’s side are battling it out with Sheffield Wednesday for the services of Wolves captain Danny Batth.
27-year-old Batth has fallen to fifth-choice in the club’s pecking order behind summer signing Leander Dendoncker, Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Ryan Bennett and Kortney Hause, finding himself surplus to requirements.
Worth a move?
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side have been excellent this season but questions still remain about the depth of their defence, which could be left exposed as the season progresses due to potential injuries and suspensions.
Signing Batth would help solve that issue and he would provide a huge boost to Leeds’ back-line, particularly after lifting the Championship title with Wolves last season – where he made 16 league appearances for the club.
However, beating Sheffield Wednesday to a deal for the 27-year-old could prove to be difficult as Batth has history with the Owls after spending two periods on loan with the club, most recently in the 2011-12 campaign.
