Opinion: Emery has first chance to prove he is the capable Wenger successor Arsenal appointed

According to Le 10 Sport, Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette is considering his future with the club as the summer transfer window approaches its closure.

What’s the story?

The Frenchman was a then club-record acquisition for the Gunners one year ago, when he joined from Lyon for a fee of around £46 million. After a bright start to life in the Premier League though, the 27-year-old’s form wavered and he succumbed to injury.

In January, Arsenal smashed their transfer record once again to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Emirates Stadium. 

Lacazette and the Gabonese striker are now locked in a battle for the right to lead the line under Unai Emery, and so far at least, having started the first three games of the new season, Aubameyang is winning.

It may therefore be of little surprise that Lacazette, whose lack of involvement towards the end of last season potentially cost him a place in France’s World Cup winning squad, is considering his options. Arsenal, though, would be mad to let him leave.

Backing Laca

Whilst Lacazette’s maiden campaign in North London wasn’t the glorious term he’d have hoped for, his quality was evident, and so far this season he has looked very good when he’s come on.

There is certainly potential for a partnership between him and Aubameyang, rather than it remaining a one or the other situation.

Their respective attributes are complimentary. Whilst Aubameyang’s pace and movement makes him particularly effective when running in behind and into the channels, Lacazette’s hold up and combination play when dropping deep is just as useful. Both are, of course, lethal finishers too.

Arsenal can’t afford to call time on Lacazette’s career with them already, and Emery must convince the striker to stay and find a way to get him playing regularly.
