Better than James Rodriguez and Isco? Leeds must swoop for relegated World Cup star
L’Equipe claim Wahbi Khazri is close to a move to Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne, but Leeds should absolutely try and hijack the move for the Sunderland playmaker.
According to French reports, Khazri’s move back to France is getting closer, but the Tunisian international’s showings at the World Cup should have plenty of English clubs sniffing around.
The Sunderland man will definitely leave Wearside after their relegation, and while it would be difficult to lure him away from a move back to Ligue 1, the prospect of playing under a manager like Marcelo Bielsa could tempt him to Elland Road.
The 27 year-old is Tunisia’s talisman, and at the end of the group stage matches he is the only player in the entire tournament with both two goals and two assists. Eat your hearts out James Rodriguez and Isco.
He was particularly impressive in his side’s 2-1 win over Panama, grabbing one goal, one assist and a superb 8.48 rating on Whoscored.
Tunisia’s star man brought a little bit of everything in his country’s only win of the tournament, making an incredible four key passes and whipping in five delicious crosses.
He also completed 90 per cent of his passes, an impressive success rate considering he is the man tasked with unlocking packed defences with his incisive passing.
Khazri has already shown he has the physicality to cope in England since joining Sunderland back in 2016, and he scored nine times in 23 Ligue 1 starts last season on loan with Rennes.
The 27 year-old, valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, would bring excellent crossing, risky forward passes, and an absolutely devilish set piece to Elland Road, and he also has the pace and ball carrying ability to thrive in Bielsa’s fast counter attacking system.
Sunderland owner Stewart Donald said on Twitter the Black Cats have already turned down offers for their most valuable asset this summer, so Leeds should swoop in while the bidding is still going.
So, Leeds fans, would you back a swoop for Khazri? Who else has impressed you at the World Cup so far? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
