Tottenham Hotspur have been rumoured to be interested in Leicester City’s Harry Maguire as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld, and his World Cup performances are showing why.

The colossal England centre-back started the first two group games and came on as a substitute for the third, and has quickly established himself as a key man in Gareth Southgate’s starting eleven.

The 25-year-old had a solid season for the Foxes after signing for them last summer, starting every Premier League game and registering two goals and four assists.

With Toby Alderweireld increasingly looking like he could be on his way to Manchester United this summer, Tottenham will need to sign a replacement and Maguire could be the perfect fit.

The 6ft4, 100kg defender has shown his versatility so far in the World Cup, adapting his play to suit England.

His passing accuracy was down at 78.4 per cent in his Premier League matches, but so far at the World Cup, it stands at an impressive 90.4 per cent, showing how he has adapted his game.

He set up Harry Kane’s injury time winner against Tunisia in the first game and his powerful runs forward have been used with great effect.

Although the standard of opposition hasn’t been the strongest, it is interesting that he has only made one clearance so far in the tournament, as opposed to the 4.6 he was averaging per game in the Premier League.

While he may have more work to do with his composure on the ball, Maguire is showing all the signs that he could adapt his game to Tottenham’s style and be more than an adequate replacement for the impressive Alderweireld should he leave the club this summer.
