"Wrong appointment" - What this pundit said about Everton on Tuesday is absolutely ridiculous

Everton got back to winning ways at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night, but former Liverpool man Jason McAteer is not impressed by Marco Silva’s start to life on Merseyside.

The Toffees were on a terrific run of form before the heart-breaking loss at Anfield back in December, and the squad never really appeared to recover from the 1-0 defeat to their red neighbours.

Including that defeat, Silva’s side have lost ten of their last 17 games in all competitions, but did return to form on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over struggling Cardiff.

McAteer though, thinks the Toffees are headed in the wrong direction under their Portuguese gaffer.

What’s he said?

“I think he was the wrong appointment for Everton,” McAteer said on beinSPORTS before Tuesday’s match.

“You look at his previous record. He’s had 69 Premier League games (prior to Cardiff match) and he’s only won 22.

“He has come in and spent a lot of money. You look at Everton and the players. Digne, who has come from Barcelona, Walcott, who has come from Arsenal, Schneiderlin, he’s come from Manchester United.

“These players were fighting for titles and now they could find themselves in a relegation battle.”

Does he have a point?

McAteer is right to question Silva given how the last few months have gone at Goodison, as the manager must answer the questions surrounding his defence, particularly when defending set pieces.

However, to say after just two transfer windows in charge that he is not the right man for the job is ridiculous, as the ex-Watford boss is still working with a squad that quite frankly isn’t his.

On top of that, the Toffees are in absolutely no danger of getting dragged into a relegation fight, as they are 12 points clear of the bottom three and in better form than most of the teams below them – as ridiculous as that may sound given the Toffees’ recent run.

Whether bias clouded his judgement or nobody told him about the 12-point gap, this is a truly ridiculous take from McAteer.
