'Phenomenal', 'Completely agree' - Loads of Newcastle fans react to pundit's huge claim

Newcastle followed up their thrilling win over Huddersfield at the weekend with a battling performance against Burnley on Tuesday night, with the Magpies emerging 2-0 victors courtesy of goals from Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff, the latter of which received praise from BBC pundit Martin Keown.

Speaking on BT Sport, the former Arsenal defender said that the 21-year-old Newcastle man’s latest stellar showing drew comparisons with Michael Carrick, due to his ability to win the ball back and make the right pass straight away.

However, Keown’s likening of Longstaff to a player who is surely on the cusp of being a Manchester United legend wasn’t even the most interesting point he made.

Having earned rave reviews this season for his performances at the base of West Ham’s midfield, Declan Rice looks set to feature for England in the not-too-distant future, but Keown thinks Longstaff has the edge on the Hammers man, as per BT Sport (via Chronicle Live).

“We have often talked about him [Rice]. I think this fella [Longstaff] is maybe better. He’s technically better, the way he strikes the ball.”

Here’s how the St James’ Park faithful on Twitter reacted to Keown’s comments…
