Opinion: Bringing World Cup star to West Ham would be a stroke of genius by Husillos

West Ham United have approached Chelsea over a potential move for Olivier Giroud, according to the Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

There were fears that Marko Arnautovic had suffered a potentially long-term injury during Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league.

However, scans have revealed that the Austrian only suffered bruising to his foot and should therefore not be on the sidelines for too long.

Lucas Perez looks to be heading for Real Betis, however, while Javier Hernandez is a transfer target for Valencia on deadline day.

The Hammers have been strongly linked with Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez, but it now seems likely that any move might have to wait until the summer.

As a result, according to the Daily Mail, West Ham have approached Chelsea over a potential move for Giroud, who is unsettled at Stamford Bridge.

Would Giroud be a good signing for West Ham?

Giroud has only managed one Premier League goal during the 2018-19 campaign.

His form this season has not exactly been terrific, but there is no question that he still has a lot to offer at the top level.

It is worth remembering that Giroud played a key role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph and could be an absolute star at the London Stadium.

Indeed, the 32-year-old scored over 100 goals during his time at Arsenal.

A switch to West Ham would surely appeal due to the fact that he could expect healthy wages in addition to an exciting new challenge.

It has been a strange January window for West Ham, but bringing Giroud to the club on deadline day would be a stroke of genius by director of football Mario Husillos.
