Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing 6ft 4in star from PL rivals this summer

As reported by The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are tracking the situation of Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, believing he could replace Michel Vorm at the club this summer.

What’s the story?

Vorm’s contract expires this summer and is reported to be considering his options, with a number of clubs interested in his services.

Although Spurs also have the reliable Hugo Lloris to call upon, if Vorm does leave, they would undoubtedly need more depth and competition for the goalkeeping position.

As a result, they’re keeping tabs on Alex McCarthy, according to The Mirror, who has just a year left on his contract.

The paper reckon Spurs could have to compete with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Wolves for his services.

Would he be a good signing?

Ousting Fraser Forster as Saints’ number one choice at St Mary’s over the last year, McCarthy has certainly emerged as a Premier League level goalkeeper, impressing on a number of occasions in the second half of the season to help Southampton escape relegation.

It would be something of a risk to install him as a number one choice at Spurs, but as back-up to Lloris he is more than capable.

However, after just finding his feet as a number one goalkeeper, would he want to immediately move to a club he would spend more time on the bench at, than the pitch?

With a year left on his contract, he could be available for a decent fee and if Spurs can convince the player his future lies in the Mauricio Pochettino’s squad then it’s something they should pursue.

Do you think Tottenham should sign him?
