What we know about Aymeric Laporte’s injury after Man City 4 – Brighton 0

Man City 4 – Brighton 0

For just the second time this Premier League season, Man City kept a clean sheet on Saturday.

The reigning champs eased to a 4-0 win at home against Brighton.

Sergio Aguero scored twice, Kevin De Bruyne opened, and Bernardo Silva scored 10 seconds after coming off the bench in the second-half.

Aymeric Laporte’s injury vs Adam Webster

However, Man City’s win was undercut by a bad injury to centre-back Aymeric Laporte.

Many consider Laporte to be the best defender on Pep Guardiola’s roster.

Against Brighton, though, Laporte only lasted 37 minutes before he was stretchered out the game.

Laporte’s knee appeared to buckle in a challenge with Brighton’s Adam Webster.

Fernandinho replaced the French defender.

What did Pep Guardiola say about Laporte’s knee?

After the match, Guardiola gave the following verdict on Laporte’s injury:

I think he is in hospital. It doesn’t look good. Tomorrow we will know.

If he is out it is because he didn’t feel good. Now, exactly what he has I don’t know.

The doctor is going to call me but I think it will be a while.

Hopefully, it is not as long as Leroy (Sane).

How long is Leroy Sane out for?

By comparing Laporte’s injury to Sane’s, some Man City fans may be fearing the worst.

The German winger is expected to miss the majority of the Premier League season with his knee injury.

How can Man City compensate for Laporte’s injury?

On Saturday, Laporte started alongside Nicolas Otamendi in City’s backline.

Otamendi’s place in the XI now looks assured for the foreseeable future.

One assumes that John Stones will partner the Argentine once he returns to action.

Stones has been injured at the start of the season.

Alternatively, Fernandinho could fill in at centre-half.

On the Brazilian playing centre-half, Guardiola said:

He is a holding midfielder, everyone knows it, me included but I think he has the conditions to play there.

The problems we have there as a situation, he is going to adapt. He is intelligent, fast, strong in the headers, in the build-up, he has the quality to see what happens in front. He can play in both positions.
