Pep Guardiola knows how to overtake Liverpool, Kalidou Koulibaly transfer updates & Man City’s 4 injuries & 1 suspension vs Newcastle

Pep Guardiola knows how Man City can overtake Liverpool

The race for the 2019-20 Premier League title is over, and already the mind-games have begun ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Liverpool have won the title ahead of Man City with seven matches to go in the season. No team has ever won the Premier League with so many games to spare.

However, according to Man City manager Pep Guardiola, he has a plan to overtake Liverpool next season. Guardiola has issued the following warning to Liverpool:

To make back-to-back [titles] . . . for a long time it didn’t happen and we did it so that means we have the mentality.

But in sport you have to live in the future. Never can you have one eye on what you have done. Never forget that we are an incredible club and organisation and what you have to do is learn.

I think we know the reason why we suffered this season and we are going to try to solve it for next season.

Are Man City likely to sign Kalidou Koulibaly?

In recent days rumours have increased that Man City are interested in signing Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.

Koulibaly, 29, is under contract at Napoli until 2023.

In the Sunday Times today, the challenges for Man City in signing Koulibaly are laid out:

Reports from Italy yesterday linked City with a move for Napoli’s centre back, Kalidou Koulibaly — but signing the Senegal international could be arduous given that Napoli’s notoriously hard-bargaining president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, would like to realise a world-record transfer fee for the player.

In addition, Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has noted that Man City still have everything to do if they hope to sign Koulibaly.

The Athletic’s Sam Lee has also confirmed that Koulibaly’s move to the Etihad Stadium may be a long way off yet.

Man City’s 4 injuries & 1 suspension vs Newcastle

Newcastle will play their first FA Cup quarterfinal in 15-years on Sunday when they host Man City at St James’ Park.

Man City are the reigning FA Cup champions after beating Watford 6-0 in last year’s final.

However, the Sky Blues, who lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Thursday to hand Liverpool this title, head to Tyneside with several selection problems.

Man City have four injury problems.

Sergio Aguero is sidelined for the rest of the season following a knee operation.

John Stones is also out of contention. Guardiola said: “He’s still injured.”

Also, Joao Cancelo is a doubt for the Newcastle game with a muscular problem.

Finally on the injury front, Phil Foden, who has scored two goals since the Premier League resumed, has an issue. The Manchester Evening News report:

Phil Foden was INJURED when he scored twice and won the man of the match award against Burnley.

The Manchester City midfielder paid the price for his heroics against the Clarets, with his leg swelling up the next day and forcing him to miss Thursday’s trip to Chelsea.

But Foden is fighting to be ready for the FA Cup quarter-final at Newcastle on Sunday, with the knock not thought to be too serious.

Lastly, after being sent off against Chelsea, Fernandinho is suspended for Newcastle.
