Arsenal & Newcastle linked to the ‘Dutch Jamie Vardy’, Wout Weghorst

Arsenal & Newcastle linked to Wout Weghorst

According to German paper Bild, Arsenal and Newcastle are both considering a summer move for Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

Wout Weghorst finished the 2019-20 Bundesliga season as the fourth-highest scorer in the league.

The Dutch centre-forward scored 16 league goals, including 4 penalties.

For the record, Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski topped the charts with a remarkable 34 goals.

What do we know about Arsenal & Newcastle’s interest?

Bild offer more detail about the Gunners’ interest in Weghorst compared to the Magpies’.

It’s reported that if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves Arsenal this summer, Weghorst could be signed as a replacement.

Aubameyang only has one-year remaining on his current deal, and it’s unclear if he’ll agree a new contract.

Bild also claim that Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter are looking to sign Aubameyang.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are name-dropped in the article without any significant additional context.

Newcastle fans should probably prepare themselves for many more transfer rumours like this as the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund close in on their takeover.

How much would Wolfsburg want for Weghorst?

Weghorst joined Wolfsburg from AZ Alkmaar back in 2018 for €10.5 million.

According to Bild, Wolfsburg are looking for €35 million to sell Weghorst this summer.

Weghorst is under contract with Die Wolves until 2023.

Why Weghorst is compared to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy

German football expert, Raphael Honigstein, recently wrote an in-depth piece on Weghorst for the Athletic.

In the article, Weghorst was compared to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.

Vardy famously joined Leicester from non-league side Fleetwood Town in 2012. Leicester paid £1 million for the striker, who has since scored 99 goals in the Premier League.

Like Vardy, Weghorst has taken his time to burst onto the top flight scene. Only now, at 27, does he appear to have made it as his goals helped Wolfsburg finish 7th in the Bundesliga, which secured a Europa League spot next season.

Aside from being a late bloomer like Vardy, Raphael Honigstein has also explained that Weghorst shares some of the same traits as the Leicester striker:

Holland’s taller, chunkier answer to Jamie Vardy — minus the bit with the electronic tag and the Skittles-flavoured vodka — still plays like he’s got a point to prove in every match.

He flies into tackles, wins more headers than almost anyone and frequently tops his team’s charts for most distance covered.

How likely is it that Weghorst joins Arsenal or Newcastle?

While Bild have linked Arsenal and Newcastle to Weghorst, right now it feels too early to judge whether this rumour has any merit.

Nevertheless, Raphael Honigstein is confident that Weghorst is attracting attention from Premier League sides:

Weghorst’s huge 1.97m (6ft 5in) frame and muscular game has predictably attracted plenty of interest from the Premier League.

He has talked about his dream of playing for Liverpool but would consider other offers to take the next step on an increasingly impressive career ladder.
