Manchesters United & City, Chelsea, Wolves will be granted UK travel quarantine exception

Champions League: Chelsea & Manchester City

Chelsea and Manchester City are the final two Premier League teams standing in this season’s Champions League.

And Chelsea’s ongoing progress in the competition is likely to be snuffed out once they play their last-16 second-leg against Bayern Munich.

Bayern won the first-leg at Stamford Bridge 3-0.

Man City, meanwhile, are in a strong position to KO Real Madrid from the competition.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne lead Man City to a 2-1 away win in Madrid in their first-leg.

 

Europa League: Man United, Wolves & Rangers

Three UK clubs are still in the hat in the Europa League.

Man United are on course to reach the quarter-finals following a 5-0 win against LASK Linz in their last-16 first-leg in Austria.

As for Wolves, they are scheduled to host Greek side Olympiacos at Molineux in the UEL. Wolves drew 1-1 in the away leg.

Lastly, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have a tough job on their hands to reach the final 8 following a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox against Bayer Leverkusen in their last-16 first-leg.

 

These 5 clubs will be granted UK travel quarantine exception

On May 10, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that all travellers entering the UK must spend two-weeks in quarantine when they enter the country. This ruled applies to travellers by air and sea.

Many wondered how this travel rule would impact the five UK clubs still competing in UEFA’s competitions this season.

However, on Monday, the Times have confirmed that these football teams will receive special dispensation to bypass these quarantine measures:

Sport in Britain is to receive a significant boost from the government with quarantine rules set to be relaxed for football clubs involved in European competitions, and Formula One teams.

As well as the F1 races, the exemption will allow Manchester City and Chelsea to continue their Champions League round-of-16 games, and for Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Glasgow Rangers to play in the Europa League.

 

What we still don’t know…

While the UK have relaxed these quarantine measures, other European countries are yet to confirm their positions on this matter.

Indeed, there’s no guarantee that other countries in Europe will reach the same conclusion as the UK government.

Should UEFA face such freedom of movement restrictions, one option being considered is to reformat the final stages of the Champions League and Europa League competitions. The Times report:

The fact that teams will be able to fly into Britain without being quarantined removes some of the uncertainty for Uefa, which hopes that a similar approach is adopted by all the European countries that have clubs involved.

If restrictions imposed by other national governments remain in place, Uefa has a standby plan of organising a mini-tournament for the quarter-finalists onwards.

 

UEFA consider ‘final four’ format wrap up the 2019-20 Champions League & Europa League

Last week we reported that UEFA are considering dramatic format changes to this season’s Champions League and Europa League.

The Champions League and Europa League are set to resume in August, while UEFA are considering adopting a ‘final four’ format to complete each competition.

The big benefit, if UEFA adopt such format changes, will be that the matches from the quarter-finals onwards would be reduced from two-legged affairs to knockout matches.

In the Champions League, that could mean that the semi-finals and final are all staged in Istanbul, Turkey.

Meanwhile, the Europa League final stages could all be held in Gdansk, Poland.

UEFA are hoping to reach a decision on these issues at their next Executive Committee meeting, scheduled for June 17.
