Carlo Ancelotti & Jurgen Klopp agree: Playing Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid was ‘criminal’

Italian paper Corriere dello Sport have spoken to Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti this weekend during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Ancelotti has revealed that he and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp both agree that the recent decision to allow Liverpool to play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield was a massive mistake.

Around 3000 Atletico fans flew to Anfield for the match on March 11.

The Everton manager told CdS that the decision to play that Champions League game was criminal:

The other day I heard [from] Klopp. He told me that making the game play in those conditions was a criminal act, I think he was right.

We are all living a life that we were not used to and that will change us profoundly. I’m sure we will all have to downsize, starting with football.

Today, the priority is health, limiting the contagion. When you start again, when you finish, the dates… believe me, I don’t care. At the moment, that’s the last thing on my mind.

I hear talk about cutting salaries, suspension of payments. They seem like inopportune solutions. Soon the economy will change, and that’s at all levels: The TV rights will be less, players and coaches will earn less, tickets will cost less because people will have less money.

I repeat, what matters now is to fight the virus effectively. Then, of course, if it will be possible to continue the season… otherwise, amen.

It makes me laugh to think of all these people who are talking about the time we need to practise. There are even those who go on about three weeks of training – it’s bull****. That is a joke. This preparation is a myth.

Atletico Madrid take pay cuts

Atletico Madrid announced this weekend that players and staff will be taking pay cut during the Covid-19 crisis.

While a precise figure is yet to be confirmed on the size of the pay cuts, the Sunday Times have revealed the probable impact on Diego Simeone’s salary:

He is currently the best paid manager anywhere football. He may no longer be that by April 1st.

Simeone can anticipate at least a 30 per cent cut to his €3.7m monthly wage for as long as professional football is suspended.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on the NHS

Jurgen Klopp has sat down for a 20-minute long interview this weekend with Liverpool TV.

Klopp discussed a range of subjects including the impact of the suspending Premier League and the wider coronavirus crisis.

When discussing the NHS, Klopp revealed how one video left him in tears:

It’s extraordinary. I think yesterday I was sent a video of people in the hospital just outside the intensive care area and when they started singing You’ll Never Walk Alone I started crying immediately. It’s unbelievable. But it shows everything, these people not only work but they have such a good spirit.
