Jonjo Shelvey is a doubt for Newvastle ahead of trip to Wolves / Is it time for the Joelinton experiment to end?

Newcastle have had a varied beginning to the Premier League season. Steve Bruce’s side currently sit 14th after 5 games, 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses.

Newcastle had a successful transfer window bringing in Bournemouth pair Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser, Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis and Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick. Bruce has maintained a strong loyalty to players who were already at the club.

Jonjo Shelvey has played every league game this season. The former Liverpool midfielder signed a new deal earlier in 2020 which will keep the England international at the club until 2023.

However, Bruce could be without the integral 28-year-old after Shelvey has been suffering with a groin injury.

Speaking ahead of Newcastles trip to Wolves Bruce said, “He’s had a sore groin now for the past two, three weeks – and tried to play with it. It’s come to the stage where he’s not going to be able to, but I’ve got nothing but the hugest respect for Jonjo.”

He’s a very, very good player, and most players wouldn’t be playing with the injury that he’s played with.”

Newcastle play Wolves on Sunday 25th October at 16:30.

When to let go

Since the arrival of Joelinton from Hoffenheim, scrutiny on the young Brazilian has been a burden. The £40 million price tag doubled the clubs previous transfer record and naturally expectation grew.

However in 43 league appearances the Brazilian has scored just twice. The concern was present before the 24-year-old signed for the Magpies. In the final season with the German side, his 28 league appearances registered just 7 goals. Far from what could be described as prolific.

Newcastle acted upon this with the signing of Callum Wilson, the former Cherries striker has already double Joelinton’s league total in 5 appearances. Playing more so on the wing, goal scoring opportunities have been far more less frequent. But with no assists either, creativity is not oozing from the Brazilian either.

A time may soon arrive which encourages Bruce to cut his losses and resort to the club record signing becoming the plan B option.
