Alphonso Davies out for 6-8 weeks with ankle ligament injury / Crossing the Atlantic with great success

Alphonso Davies has become one of the most exciting young talents in European football. Moving from Vancouver Whitecaps as left-sided midfield player, the Canadian international has found his natural habitat at left-back.

The movement of North American talent to Europe and in particular the Bundesliga is nothing new. One of the United States most successful players Landon Donovan began his senior career at Bayer Leverkusen but made his name in the States.

However, the more recent talent, including Davies, have been taking the level of quality to a different plain. Davies compatriot Jonathan David made a move from the Belgian league to Lille to replace Victor Osimhen.

Christian Pulisic developed at Borrusia Dortmund before making the move across the channel to Chelsea where he resides as one of Frank Lampard’s key attackers. The injury to Davies will come as a blow to Bayern who use the Canadian’s pace and attacking verve as a damaging asset. Lucas Hernandez replaced the injured Davies as a like-for-like switch although Hernandez has seen greater use at centre-back since his switch from Atletico Madrid.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick revealed the injury’s extent after Bayern’s 5-0 demolition of Frankfurt.

“He has a ligament injury on his right ankle,” said the Champions League winning coach.

“He’s twisted and tore a ligament, a ligament was partially torn off. We expect him to be out for six to eight weeks.”

It is likely that Davies will miss most if not all of bayern’s Champions League campaign. In addition to the Klassiker at Borussia Dortmund.
